Sometimes you may wonder about the story behind old buildings. If walls could speak, what would they say? There are some cases where you may be better off without knowing, and this is exactly one of those cases. This building in North Dakota is well known and completely normal looking from the outside, but according to certain legends there was - or still is - something lurking in those walls.
Proceed with caution on this creepy story...
The building in question is actually located right on the capitol grounds in Bismarck, North Dakota.
The "Sky Scraper on the Prairie" is a famous sight here in North Dakota, but that isn't the building we are talking about. It happens to be in an entirely different building on the grounds.
The structure shown in the center here is the one in question - the Liberty Memorial Building, the oldest structure on the grounds.
This was built in 1924 and is currently the oldest part of the entire capitol. At one point it was the state museum but was transformed into the library it is today. The state museum is now in a different place on the capitol.
Now a library, the Liberty Memorial Building was known to be haunted by what became known as the "Stack Monster."
The Stack Monster, referring to library stacks, was once a resident here that was quite well known to employees and visitors. According to legend, the monster made its presence known with mysterious footsteps, shadows, and disembodied voices. Sometimes it would call out people's names or cough at random. The people who heard these noises would investigate them and never find anyone there.
The Stack Monster is said to have stopped haunting the building in 1981 when it went under renovations and the State Historical Society moved to the new state museum.
Ever since they moved, no signs have been seen of The Stack Monster. One employee swears that at the time of the move, they saw a mysterious figure leave the building. The State Historical Society has made a special security badge for the Stack Monster at the new state museum should they ever decide to come back. Obviously they are more than welcome to! It hasn't yet, but you never know what could happen.
