There are several abandoned places in North Dakota - from the long-forgotten farmhouses and empty towns that once thrived to a few unusual facilities that are no longer in use. One of the most notable, though, is an abandoned sanatorium in North Dakota, which is officially known as the San Haven Sanatorium. It was once a state facility for tuberculosis patients, then for mentally ill patients, before shutting down in the 1990s. Today, the abandoned insane asylum in North Dakota still stands, an empty shell of what it once was with a dark past. Seeing what's inside the grounds of what is easily one of the creepiest abandoned places in North Dakota is staggering, yet fascinating.
The San Haven Sanatorium was built as a tuberculosis sanatorium in 1912 in the Turtle Mountains of North Dakota. Today, it sits abandoned.
Back when it opened, it was simply known as the State Sanatorium and had hundreds of patients over its time, starting with tuberculosis patients and eventually converting over to an asylum for people with mental illness.
This abandoned sanatorium closed its doors for good in 1992 due to a variety of issues. The huge facility has been left untouched, except by vandals, for decades.
What went on behind these walls isn't entirely known, but many consider the place to be haunted and full of a dark history.
As of now, nature is reclaiming this abandoned place. Even some local horses can be seen foraging around in this photo.
Inside the buildings, you can see just how dilapidated they are. Entire chunks of the structure are missing, crumbled and collapsed and home to any number of wildlife.
Peeling paint, graffiti, broken glass, and collapsed floors and roofs are just some of the many issues going on inside. It looks nothing like it did over a hundred years ago when it was first built.
The San Haven Sanatorium is a dull and empty shell and has earned a spot as one of the most notorious abandoned places in North Dakota. It truly is fascinating.
Please note that the San Haven Sanatorium is on private property and any exploration of it is trespassing, so the best way to see and learn about it is through photographs and video, such as this fascinating drone peek inside.
