Where can you go to stroll through a Victorian Christmas House in North Carolina? Well, the obvious answer is, of course, The Biltmore. But sometimes you may not have all day to spend exploring the massive estate just to ensure you get your money's worth, right? Or perhaps you live all the way over on the coast and have to dedicate an entire weekend to the nearly nine-hour drive it takes to get to Asheville.
Good news, North Carolina! There's another Victorian Christmas House in the Tar Heel State and it's equally as wonderful as The Biltmore.
Welcome to Körner’s Folly, a 22-room, 6,000-square-foot, 3.5-floor mansion built in Kernersville in 1880.
Now North Carolina's a big state, so if you're not so sure where you are in relation to how far it is to Kernersville, that's an easy fix!
Here's a Google map showing Kernersville is 10 miles to the east of Winston Salem and 20 miles northwest of Greensboro. See? Not that far at all.
And what you'll find in this grand, old Victorian house museum at Christmastime is totally worth every effort to get here.
Especially given the price tag to tour: $10 for adults and $5 for kids. See??
The museum's staff and a group of dedicated volunteers take the entire month of November decorating every inch of the mansion with Victorian holiday decor.
It's really like strolling through a holiday issue of Victoria Magazine or Architectural Digest.
You see, Körner’s Folly is entirely unique as a museum because it features furniture original to the property, as well as tons of ornate plaster castings the builder/owner put into place from the start.
The wood you see here on this fireplace mantle and above the mirror? Hand-carved.
The ceilings, stairwells... the architecture here is second to none when it comes to Victorian detail.
And the holiday decor really touches every nook and cranny.
Your tickets must be purchased online this year and are timed for a new entry into the mansion every 15 minutes. The museum limits each entry to only 10 people and only 10 persons are allowed in any room at one time. They really do all they can to enrich the experience for visitors.
You'll be mesmerized in all the same ways as with a visit to the Biltmore at Christmas, only it's better in a smaller space with a group size limited to 10 people.
You'll have plenty of time for your self-guided tour. Trust us.
Körner’s Folly has a total of 15 fireplaces, original cast-plaster details, gorgeous hand-laid tiles, and woodwork hand carvings.
The third floor contains a small theater where local performances were held back in the day.
