Combine your sense of adventure, love of literature, and taste for delicious food with a visit to this Edgar Allan Poe-inspired restaurant in North Carolina for a extraordinary experience in the Tar Heel State. Poe's Tavern in Wrightsville Beach is an awe-inspiring tribute to America's moodiest of macabre writers and his presence is known (if not also felt) in every nuance of this fun themed eatery.
Located only steps from Causeway Drive enroute to the beachfront, Poe's Tavern sticks out like a sore thumb among the brightly colored, beachy businesses that surround the restaurant.
But that's expected of an eatery that pays homage to America's macabre sweetheart of literature. The drab, gray exterior is dressed up a bit with some brightly-colored flowers, but it's nothing like the brightly painted neighboring buildings. Edgar Allan Poe's likeness hangs on the sign posted out front.
And his legendary Goldbug is inlaid in mosaic tile at the entrance.
With three locations in East Coast beach towns (Wrightsville Beach, Charleston, and Atlantic Beach, FL), the mosaic bug with a striking resemblance to a gold-plated palmetto bug is a landmark present at the entrance to all three Poe's locations.
Another signature for Poe's Tavern lies in the shrine erected for the beloved literary genius.
Photos, drawings, and other reminders of Edgar Allan Poe adorn the walls, including a giant, hand-painted head on the far wall of the restaurant. No matter which way your eyes dart, you're sure to be in view of Poe staring back in a bizarre, one-dimensional fashion.
Visitors also love the Poe-inspired burgers and other menu items.
Some claim they're the best burgers in town. From the menu alone, you can order up the Gold Bug burger, the Annabel Lee, the Black Cat, the House of Usher, or our fave: the Rue Morgue. It's served without a bun and topped with Edgar's Drunken Chili, Queso, and a Fried Egg.
Poe's is widely known for their off-the-chain daily burger creations.
You'll be amazed by the brave combinations you'll find among the daily specials. The burger seen here (topped with fried shrimp) is delicious, but doesn't even compare to what the chefs do for occasions like National Peanut Butter And Jelly Day.
Aside from the enormous and delicious burgers, you can also order tacos, quesadillas, nachos, sandwiches, soups, salads, and more.
Even though the burgers steal the show, there is something here for everyone — even the occasional person who doesn't eat burgers.
In spite of the macabre undertone of Poe's Tavern in Wrightsville Beach, you'll walk away not only satisfied — but also happy!
