The Southern hospitality in the charming town of Burgaw makes it worthwhile to go off the beaten path in North Carolina. For history lovers, this place is a paradise in its offerings of historic buildings and antiques. But it also has plenty of modern amenities and is only 25 minutes from the beach. Take a peek at several reasons to visit Burgaw.
We could grow accustomed to seeing mornings like this.
The Pender County Courthouse never looked prettier, and while you're up, grab an outstanding homemade breakfast at Sweet Bee’s Country Grill.
1. Breakfast picnic at Bishop Rayford Hankins Memorial Park
This attractive greenspace is connected to the Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail - a 2.2-mile loop - if you want to walk off your breakfast and see more of the natural sights.
2. Pender County Historical Museum
For history lovers, catch a glimpse of the town's magical past in this museum housed in Burgaw's first brick house (circa 1917), known as the Burton-Noel House.
It's open for self-guided tours from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
3. The Burgaw Depot is the oldest railroad depot in North Carolina.
The original building, now the warehouse section, was built in about 1850, which still shows signs of a Union cavalry attack in 1863. To visit the small museum inside, call the Town of Burgaw at 910-259-2151.
4. A hearty meal and a good beer at Burgaw Brewing
The 4,000-square-foot building in the heart of historic downtown houses a 10-barrel brewing system. See the menu on Burgaw Brewing’s website.
From snacks and "handhelds" to classics like Fish & Chips, try something new.
We love the braised short-rib hoagie, with crunch Granny Smith apple slaw, jalapenos, and pickles on a toasted
hoagie roll.
5. Take something home from Burgaw Antiqueplace.
This place is full of prized antiques, furniture, and vintage collectibles. You'll stay busy for hours sorting through the eclectic mix of inventory. Check out the store on the Burgaw Antiqueplace Facebook page.
6. Check out the town's fun events.
The Summer on the Square Concert series is worthwhile as are the Pender County Library events.
