A home is a place of comfort, quiet, solitude. A place where we can simply be ourselves and allow our imaginative minds to unravel, literally and metaphorically. One such home in North Carolina though, is more than imagination, it's a pure work of art. If you've never visited Körner's Folly, you should.
Jule Gilmer Körner was a man of many artistic trades - a decorator, painter, furniture and interior designer. At one particular house, he turned his skills into pure magic. Found in Kernersville is perhaps his greatest work – Körner’s Folly. What started as a 'catalogue' for Jule to display his work transformed into something that was the talk of the town, and still somewhat is today.
As the house came to life, one neighbor said "...that will surely be Jule Körner’s folly." The architectural design, high and low ceilings, small and large windows when matched with unique furniture slowly grew into an eccentric creation.
At times, Körner's Folly feels like a life-size doll house. One second you enter a child-size room, the next airy, open breezeways. Throughout the house are nooks, crannies, and breathtaking murals. There's something new and interesting around each corner. In total, the house has 22 rooms spread out over three floors and seven levels. It's a myriad of difference and similarity. No two doors or windows are the same. The ceilings range from 5 1/2 ft. to 25 ft. There's a former stable that's now a library, Cupid's Park Theatre, a private theatre on the third floor and 15 different fireplaces.
The house is open for self-guided tours you won't forget, it's one part wonder, one part realism, and the other pure work of fairytales.
Jule died in 1924, his wife Polly 10 years late. After, the house fell under a multitude of various uses - family summer home, open after WWII for tours, a funeral home, an antique store, even an architect's office and residence. Today, Körner’s Folly, Inc. is the group that maintains the house. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open year round for tours, with some 6,000 visitors coming from all over to experience the magic for themselves.
Korners Folly is such a cool place! I'd love to escape to here and spend a day. Have you visited before?
