Transylvania County alone has over 250 waterfalls; WNC is brimming with them! Any hike you take, there's usually a waterfall at the end or on the trail. These 20 are the best in North Carolina.
This 10-acre botanical garden is magical. Located on the UNC Charlotte Campus, there's the Susie Harwood Garden with asian-inspired decor and water garden. Van Landingham is filled with native wildflowers and a greenhouse packed with orchids and a Venus fly trap. This popular destination is a beautiful, quick way to escape from the usual hustle and bustle.
If you're on the eastern side of the state, a trip to the beach is (relatively) free...minus gas. Spending a whole day here is a truly magical way to unwind. Pack a lunch and spend the day miles away from it all.
From Burnsville to Asheville to Seagrove and all over the state - so many artists reside here, and a lot of galleries are free to enter. You could spend a whole day browsing art in North Carolina. The River Arts District in Asheville is packed to the brim with studios and galleries, so pay it a visit!
North Carolina is a music haven, and that culture is still celebrated today. Many bars and restaurants offer free live music on the weekend. In the summer, music takes over many parks in the cities and small towns. Winter calls for a more cozy indoor setting, so check in your local area to search concerts and free shows.
One thing I love about North Carolina is that, regardless of how close you are to the city, you're usually only a 30-minute drive from the country. On a clear night, pack up the car or truck with blankets and snacks, drive out to the countryside and relax beneath the stars. Romantic!
This is a more seasonal free topic - but with Christmas coming up, why not? McAdenville, AKA Christmas Town USA, is totally free to visit! The 1.3 mile stretch transforms into something straight out of a movie where you can drive or walk to admire the houses, trees, street lights...everything, really, decorated with lights and transformed into a Christmas wonderland.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. What was once a small textile village, the Henry River Mill Village, in Hickory is valuable evidence of the industrial heritage of the surrounding area. This abandoned, eerie place in North Carolina draws visitors every year for historical tours, lodging, and other events. Withstanding so much time, there are bound to be some eager voices hoping for a sympathetic ear, which is why paranormal investigations are so helpful and popular in this village. From its erection in 1905 to its proud place in the National Register of Historic Places in 2019, the Henry River Mill Village Historic District has stood the test of time.
And in the end it's the people we remember, as is the case with this unique and valuable remnant. In the early 1900s, the Aderholdt and Rudisill families established the Henry River Manufacturing Co.
This cotton yarn manufacturer opened up in 1905, with worker houses, a bridge, a two-story boarding house, a power-producing dam, a brick company store, and the original three-story brick mill you see behind the loyal workers who kept the place going. Notice some of the faces belong to children.
The mill burned down in 1977, just after Wade R. Sheppard purchased the property.
Since the tragic loss of that historic building, driving by the two-story brick company store, it is easy to see why it is now a starring feature of the abandoned, eerie place.
And if you are very still, you may just hear some echoes from long-ago life in the district.
In addition to paranormal enthusiasts, it has also drawn the attention of movie producers as the 72-acre village was a filming location of "District 12," "The Hunger Games."
