How many city parks in the Tar Heel State have amusement rides? The answer to that would be three, but they're certainly not all as fantastic as this one in Raleigh. Pullen Park is a true gem among gems. With amusement rides including a carousel, a beautiful trail, and pedal boat rentals, this is one of the best family-friendly places in North Carolina. In addition to all the fun, there's also a cafe with delicious food. Everyone can undoubtedly have a great time with a visit to Pullen Park.
Pullen Park opened with great excitement back in 1887, when the population of the entire city of Raleigh had peaked just above 10,000 people.
With an opening year of 1887, the park not only boasts the title of oldest public park in the state but also the first public park to open in North Carolina.
Today its 66.4 acres sprawl to the west of downtown Raleigh situated between Western Boulevard, Pullen Road, Ashe Avenue, and Raleigh's historic Hillsborough Street.
What was once merely farmland donated by Richard Stanhope Pullen, now holds the key to hours and hours of enjoyment for everyone from singles, to couples, and entire families.
In terms of attractions, the park's amusements are among the most popular with visitors.
To be honest, it's nearly impossible to find amusement rides like these that are so well maintained and so incredibly affordable. Tickets for any of the rides can be purchased at the park's ticket window and each ride is surprisingly affordable. A visit here without a scenic trip around the park on the C.P. Huntington Miniature Train (pictured) would not be complete for adults or youngsters.
Additionally, visitors can head over to the lake and pedal their way all around Lake Howell in one of the many pedal boats the park rents. The boats require four tickets for a one-half-hour cruise.
Among the other must-see and experience amusement rides at Pullen Park is the 1917 Dentzel carousel. Reportedly, the park's historic Dentzel is one of only seven that are left in the United States. (One of the other six is located at the San Francisco zoo.)
Of course, a park wouldn't be a true park if it didn't have picnic areas, ball fields, playgrounds, walking paths, or hiking trails. You'll find those here, too. As well as some of the best park eats you've ever had. Be sure to check out the Pullen Cafe for a meal or even just a snack.
The menu features a wide variety of sandwiches, pizzas, hot dogs, quesadillas, chicken tenders, and all sorts of other options.
Whether you're in the mood for comfort food in the form of a freshly made piping hot pizza or ...
... prefer something a bit different yet quick, you'll find it on the menu at Pullen Cafe at Pullen Park.

Raleigh certainly doesn't skimp on their green spaces. Just up the road from Pullen Park is another can't-miss place to play. This one is famous for its daffodil trail in the spring and thousands and thousands of sunflowers that bloom each July. Check out Dorothea Dix Park while you're out exploring!
