In the middle of the still woodsy parts of the Roanoke Rapids/Weldon neck of the Tar Heel State, wanderers on a certain trail will stumble upon a stunning bridge to nowhere in North Carolina. If you've yet to discover the Roanoke Canal Trail, you're in for a striking and completely unexpected surprise. So, if you're up for an adventure, I invite you to read more about the exciting time you'll have while hiking in North Carolina.
The bridge to nowhere in North Carolina is commonly referred to by locals as the Chockoyotte Aqueduct. However, this waterway presents much more than an artificial canal in the middle of the woods.
The Chockoyotte Aqueduct canal and bridge were first constructed between 1819 and 1823. The bridge was revitalized and expanded between 1890 and 1904.
You'll find this bridge to nowhere while hiking the Roanoke Canal Trail leading from the lake and continuing on to Highway 301.
Typically at least three hours each way, this trail offers a shorter version. Visitors interested in jumping ahead to a starting point near the bridge to nowhere can hop on the trail where the number three is seen at the Riverside Parking Lot on the map below.
This cuts off quite a bit of time when you're hiking in this part of North Carolina.
If you plan on hiking in North Carolina \ throughout the day, the entire trail (which takes just over six hours out and back) will not disappoint. However, I encourage you to come prepared, since the total hike is 14 miles.
As you follow this trail, you'll find the ruins of many notable structures.
In addition, you'll discover kiosks containing pertinent information taking the guesswork out of what purpose each ruin served in history.
Beneath the bright green grassy surface lies a spectacular arched bridge made of hand-cut stones.
Hence, this is quite a site to come across when you're hiking in North Carolina.
And of course, there's always that beautiful Chockoyotte Aqueduct bridge where you can sit for a while and contemplate life, love, and anything. We can't think of a better way to enjoy the day hiking in North Carolina!
