If something is in poor condition because of neglect or disuse, it's considered derelict, among other things. And such is the case with many abandoned houses in North Carolina, such as this one, which literally looks as if someone walked out and left all their possessions behind; possessions that are still here. There's something particularly eerie about this abandoned place in NC, as though the former residents just evaporated into thin air. We may never know quite what happened, but we can examine the evidence. Check it out below.
There are countless reasons, unfortunately, why a beautiful 150-year-old home with great architectural elements might be abandoned.
But typically, even if there's an issue with affordability, properties like this are sold or reclaimed by the town and then put to new use. The strange thing about this property is that that wasn't the case.
And we could speculate all day but the truth is, we may never know how this gorgeous old home came to be in the condition you're about to witness.
It is tragic to see such an architectural wonder sitting in such squalor.
In images captured and posted last summer to YouTube, the old home looks as if someone left and never returned.
There are still liquor bottles on the shelves, as though it was just happy hour five minutes ago.
Christmas decor is seen on the mantles and strewn throughout the house. An old upright piano sits untouched, its lid open and waiting for someone to play a tune.
Perhaps the family that once lived here was in the middle of a festive holiday party when things took a turn and they abandoned the property.
The grand historic home in NC, reportedly built in 1872, features some wonderful elements, like a large rotunda that makes up a room on the second floor and covers the porch at the front door.
It's a stately and beautiful home that will hopefully find care and restoration under a new owner.
Even the front door has a rounded wall, with a slatted ceiling inside the door. Exposed pipes show what could possibly be the addition of indoor plumbing long after the home was built.
Walking through the home might spark a sense of sadness or emptiness when viewing all that was left behind here by the owner.
It's not just a home that was abandoned but a whole life it seems, just left behind while the previous owners struck out for something new.
Every single room is stuffed to the gill with items.
While we don't know where the previous owner went, we can say that they had pack-rat tendencies.
Walls still contain the most recent layer of paint. Some windows are broken entirely, while others are cracked or simply still intact.
It's possible that the broken windows are from break-ins after the property was abandoned. It's not uncommon for people to visit abandoned properties, either out of interest or to look for resale items.
And the front porch emits vibes of days gone by. Vibes of rocking chairs and glasses of ice-cold lemonade. Vibes of the sounds of children's laughter just steps away in the front yard.
It's easy to imagine what a beautiful home this used to be and the wonderful memories that are captured inside its walls.
Although the home itself is hauntingly beautiful, it also invokes a sense of sadness.
