As much as we love the exciting energy that comes along with living in one of New York's largest cities, we find ourselves wanting to take advantage of Western New York's beautiful outdoor scenery every now and then. While you can find plenty of serene places to enjoy out along the waterfront, sometimes we're looking to explore an area we're a bit less familiar with. Today, we're headed only 30 miles north of the Queen City for a stroll along a fascinating place in Niagara County. Take a look!
Right along the charming Erie Canal Heritage Trail, Lockport is where you'll find New York's most famous Upside-Down Bridge.
Easy to access, the Upside-Down Bridge of Lockport was built all the way back in 1902 and continues to wow those who go for a stroll underneath it.
Considered to be one of the most intriguing pieces in New York, the deck truss makes it appear as though the bridge you're walking underneath is actually upside-down.
According to the rumors that have swirled around throughout history, the Upside-Down Bridge was built the way it is due to the fact that wanted to block tall ships from delivering goods along the Erie Canal, though that's never been completely confirmed.
Today, you'll find locals and out-of-town visitors enjoying guided tours led along the Erie Canal's Heritage Trail here in Lockport, where people come to learn all about the area's history and this intriguing bridge.
With so many bridges around here in Western New York alone, who knew such a fascinating work of industrial architecture existed so close to our backyards?
