In a world full of pavement and modern technology, nostalgic gems like covered bridges have quickly become a thing of the past. With most of America's covered bridges having been torn down and replaced over the years, the ones that are still left standing are the ones we've come to appreciate the most. Here to remind you that our roads were once made up of wooden pathways, our country's oldest covered bridge can be found right here in New York and it's completely picture perfect.
Built back in 1825, today you can view the Hyde Hall Covered Bridge right in Glimmgerglass State Park.
The bridge was built by three men, Cyrenus Clark, Andrew Alden and Lorenzo Bates back in 1825. Found in Otsego County, the bridge is a total of 53-feet long and is a single span structure.
The covered bridge is not only historic for being the oldest one in our country, it also holds historical significance for another reason. The bridge incorporates the Burr Arch Design, patented by Theodore Burr in 1817. Today, there are only two authentic Burr Arch Truss Bridges in all of New York.
Inside Glimmerglass State Park you'll find the one-mile long Covered Bridge Trail that will lead you to the historic landmark.
Less than a fifteen minute drive from Cooperstown, Glimmerglass State Park is just one of our many stunning outdoor spaces to explore. The state park features other trails as well that will give you wonderful views of Otsego Lake!
The bridge is now only for pedestrians and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Placed on the national register in 1998, the state of New York has made sure to take care of this fascinating piece of history over the years. Back in 1967, the State of New York restored the bridge that crosses over Shadow Brook in our state park.
Today you can enjoy our state park and the country's oldest covered bridge, all while being surrounded by scenic beauty that's picture perfect.
Not only will you love exploring the one-mile long trail that leads you to the bridge and is great for visitors of all ages, the park also features plenty of picnic tables nearby and amazing locations to stop and enjoy along the way. You won't want to forget your camera for this adventure!
