If you're a big reader and are a fan of the places where large quantities of books are kept, then you're going to fall head over heels for the Uris Library at Cornell University in Ithaca. It's this library that draws many students from all over the world to Cornell; it's always busy and parts of it are open 24 hours a day. Lucky for us, it's also open to the public, so non-students can visit it, too. Read on to learn more about this beautiful library in New York.
This library is really special. It first opened in 1891 as the university's first library building and it's been going strong ever since.
The Uris Library was designed by the school's first student of architecture, William Henry Miller, in Richardson Romanesque style. There are ornate details all over this library, both inside and out - be sure to take the time to notice them.
It was refurbished in 1962 using funds donated by Harold and Percy Uris and it was renamed for them at that time.
This library is huge. It contains more then 2,000,000 print volumes, 2,000,000 microforms, and 650,000 maps. When you visit this three-tiered section of the library, you'll be surrounded by books. If you're a book lover, it's really quite breathtaking.
There are all sorts of private nooks and crannies that are perfect for studying, writing, or relaxing with a good book.
The library's vast and plentiful windows look out on Cornell's beautiful campus.
There are many different seating options for all types of personalities and all types of library needs.
There are even several fireplaces to enjoy. They are especially lovely on cold winter days, of which there are many in Ithaca.
There are also large open areas that are quite beautiful. This room is a great space for reading or studying with friends.
Some areas have been modernized with even more comfortable and rather modern furniture. Although this area looks different from other parts of the library, it doesn't take away from the overall beauty at all.
You're going to love this library. Public visitors are welcome to view and use all of the library materials in the library, but only students can check items out. Even if you don't plan to use the library for research or study purposes, though, this library is well worth a visit for anyone who loves libraries and books.
The Uris Library at Cornell University is perhaps the most beautiful library in New York. Stop by for a visit the next time you're in Ithaca - you'll be glad that you did!
