Tucked away out amongst the Thousand Islands, you'll find a romantic getaway that sadly has a tragic history that will break your heart.
In the beginning of the 1900s, a millionaire by the name of George C. Boldt would embark on the journey of creating an actual castle for his wife.
After purchasing Heart Island in Alexandria Bay, Boldt set his sights on creating a beautifully decorated island for his wife. The family spent their summers up in the Thousand Island region while the island's structures were under construction.
Hundreds of workers were involved in the original creation of Boldt Castle, a six story castle that has over one hundred rooms.
While some of us can't even manage to scrounge up one hundred pennies in a day, Boldt was determined to show his affection for his wife. The island was made up of incredible detail, with the castle featuring tunnels and gardens that look like they belong to the the other side of the world.
Sadly, out of nowhere Boldt would experience the death of his wife Louise before Heart Island was fully completed for her.
Cue the tears. Most of us have a hard enough time hinting to our significant others that we'd like a kind gesture of love without having to completely spell things out for them. But George C. Boldt decides to buy not only get an island for his wife, but to also build her a castle and what happens? She dies before she can even fully enjoy the romantic gift.
Today, all over the island you can find romantic details that will make your trip here unforgettable. From heart-shaped garden designs to eye-catching water fountains, there's so many incredible things that make this attraction one of the most romantic in New York.
After Louise's death, Boldt would never return back to the castle and island again.

After Boldt gave up on the sweet gesture for his wife, the island would remain abandoned for more than 70 years.
With no one left to take care of this property, the structures and buildings of Heart Island were left to fight against the strong forces of Mother Nature. Also experiencing troublesome vandalism, the original structures of the island began to crumble.
It wouldn't be until 1977 that the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority would take over the property. Since the island has been in the hands of this authority, several millions of dollars have been poured into restoring and improving all there is on Heart Island. Finally finishing the work of George C. Boldt by completing his romantic buildings.
