New Orleans has dozens of beautiful museums like the National WWII Museum and the New Orleans Museum of Art where thousands of tourists flock to every year, but there are also several underrated museums that are absolutely worth your time. In no particular order, here are some of our favorites.

1. Haunted Museum

Are you a believer? If so, you’ll love this museum. The museum is housed in a 200-year-old home that is believed to be haunted by spirits from the past. As you’re guided around the house, you’ll learn the history of the building and the spooky past of some of the residents and the incidents that occurred here. 826 N. 2. Treme’s Petit Jazz Museum

If you’re interested in the history of jazz music, then you must stop by Treme’s Petit Jazz Museum. Founder Al Jackson grew up in the Treme neighborhood, and would love to share his wealth of knowledge with you. You’ll learn about the history of jazz through artifacts, visual art, the music itself, and Mr. Jackson’s stories. 1500 Governor Nicholls St., Treme, New Orleans, 70116.

3. New Orleans Pharmacy Museum

The former home of Louis J. Dufilho Jr. who was the first licensed pharmacist in America, this incredible museum features several exhibits that gives visitors a glimpse into early medicine. From surgical instruments to medicinal herbs used in the 19th century, you’ll walk away with a great appreciation for how far we’ve come in the medical field. 514 Chartres St., New Orleans, LA 70130.

4. 1850 House

The 1850 House offers a rare opportunity to peek into what life was life for the middle and upper-class lives of New Orleanians in an antebellum age. 523 St. Ann St., New Orleans, LA 70116.

5. Museum of Death

Warning: this museum isn’t for the squeamish. As the name suggests, this specialty museum focuses on death and features exhibits on notorious serial killers, crime scene photos, human skeletons, and more. 227 Dauphine St., New Orleans, LA 70112.

6. New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum

New Orleans and Voodoo have a long history together. This incredible museum opened up in 1972 and won’t take long to walk through. You’ll see historic voodoo relics, paintings, artifacts, and sculptures and walk away with a deeper understanding of the religion. 724 Dumaine St., New Orleans, LA 70116.

7. Southern Food & Beverage Museum

Celebrating all things food and drink related in the South, this unique museum is a must-see for all southerners. You’ll learn about the historical background of the food we know and love and how it has shaped our culture. 1504 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70113.

8. The Museum of the American Cocktail

Located inside the Southern Food & Beverage Museum, this charming museum is so perfectly New Orleans. From absinthe to bourbon, you’ll have an opportunity to learn the history of the cocktail, preparation techniques, and have a chance to purchase some things in the gift shop.
