New Mexico is home to many sacred sites, both natural and man made. One of the most impressive examples from the latter category can be found in beautiful Santa Fe. This local landmark is worth a visit for all who want to discover beauty, tranquility, and history in one place.
You don't have to be Catholic to appreciate the massive work of art that is the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi (also known as St. Francis Cathedral) in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The church has lived many lives in its hundreds of years. The original structure was a small adobe church built in 1625 and destroyed in the Pueblo Revolt in 1680. La Parroquia replaced the original in the early 1700s, and the new cathedral was constructed from 1869 to 1887.
A small chapel is all that remains of La Parroquia, but it holds one of the cathedral's crown jewels. La Conquistadora is one of the oldest representations of The Virgin Mary in the country, brought to the church in 1626. She is named La Conquistadora because of the church's mission to help spread Catholicism to the region.
The cathedral as it stands today is a lovely example of the Romanesque Revival style that stands out against the local landscape. It has a unique appearance because the church lacked the funds to complete the 160-foot spires as planned.
Its features include intricate stained-glass windows, a large, hand painted reredos depicting saints, and bronze doors carved with scenes from church history.
Located only a short walk from the lively Santa Fe Plaza, this historic landmark is an easy and worthwhile addition to almost any itinerary.
The church is especially beautiful in the light of the setting sun, so long as there is still enough light left to filter through its colorful stained-glass windows.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi is still in use today and open to the public daily. Admission is free (but, of course, donations are always welcome). Morning and evening masses are held every day of the week. Please check the church's website for the complete calendar and schedule.
