When times are tough, briefly escaping into another world can help alleviate some of the anxieties of real life. For some people, it may be books. For others, movies. If art in its traditional, visual medium is more your style, you'll want to check out this unique virtual tour.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum was recently named as one of the best American art museums by Lonely Planet, and it just happens to also be one you can virtually tour.
Google has a special Arts & Culture section in which you can explore some incredible places around the world. This includes viewing the art collections at a number of museums, including the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
Through the Google Arts & Culture site, you'll have the opportunity to see some of O'Keeffe's artwork up close.
During the virtual tour, you'll get to take a look at 31 pieces of artwork that documents O'Keeffe's work through the decades. Paintings both popular and little-known are featured on the site, including her famous flowers and desert scenes.
Nothing ever matches up to seeing artwork up close—brushstrokes, textures, and exact colors don't quite evoke the same awe on-screen as they do in person—but seeing a high-resolution scan of a painting is still incredible.
Take, for example, this detail of her 1941 painting "Pedernal," a landscape view of a mountain. You'll see hints of texture, areas where O'Keeffe blended colors, and stray pencil marks. It's still a mesmerizing sight!
The museum focuses on the art and life of the famed artist who built a new life and career in the Santa Fe area.
You'll want to plan to eventually visit in person; the museum features 150 paintings, hundreds of sketches, sculptures, and items that show the inspiration behind some of O'Keeffe's most famous pieces.
