One of the most charming parts of visiting Albuquerque is walking through the heart of the city - historic Old Town. The area dates back to the 18th century when Villa de Albuquerque was founded by New Mexican governor Francisco Cuervo y Valdes in 1706.
Seeing the old buildings in this area of town is a major part of the charm, simultaneously whisking you back to another era while enjoying the conveniences of modernity.
One store here that stands out is Aceves Old Town Basket & Rug Shop, a quaint gift shop sitting right on Romero and Plaza Streets.
Also known as the Florencio Zamora building, the brick and adobe building was constructed around 1893.
The name comes from the butcher who operated his meat shop here through the 1930s. Since then, the building has also been a grocery store and post office over the years.
But most people today recognize it as the Aceves Old Town Basket & Rug Shop. The shop has been in the same location since 1973, so it's definitely an Old Town icon.
Inside, you'll find a large number of souvenirs that you can only find in New Mexico and the Southwest. For example, you'll find merchandise related to Route 66, New Mexican chiles, and the area's history.
And, of course, you'll find plenty of baskets and rugs here as well!
