The tombstone itself has quite an interesting history. It was first stolen in 1951 and was missing for approximately 26 years. Shortly after it was recovered, it was stolen once again in 1981. Fortunately, it was later found in California. Once it was brought back to Fort Sumner, the tombstone was set in iron shackles at Billy’s feet in 1981.
