New Jersey is home to a handful of stunning castles, several of which you can visit. I've covered many of them previously, and you can check those out here. Still, there is at least one castle that I haven't covered yet. While it may seem a little cheesy, give it a chance.
Medieval Times is not just for kids. I repeat, Medieval Times is not just for kids.
Sure, children will love watching the immersive show that transports visitors through time.
But you will, too. Enjoy jousting, weaponry, falconry and horsemanship. It is definitely a unique experience.
These weapons aren't props, but the cast and crew are skilled professionals. The jousting is always a thrill, and so is the falcon flying right over your head.
Root for one of six knights and cheer on your champion. The audience really gets into the spirit.
Each knight has a distinct personality and there is a storyline behind the spectacle.
Lucky ladies have the chance to catch carnations from their knights.
I caught one once. But I gave it away to the younger girl standing next to me. Must have been all the chivalry I was surrounded by, or the spirit of camaraderie.
But it's not just a show, dine on a 4-course meal fit for a king (or queen).
Guests feast on garlic bread, tomato bisque soup, roasted chicken, sweet buttered corn, herb-basted potatoes, the pastry of the castle, coffee and two rounds of select beverages - all included with your ticket. Adult beverages are available for purchase. Don't expect any utensils - remember, you're in medieval times. Vegetarian options are available.
Don't miss the armory in the Grand Hall where you can see authentic replicas up close.
And let's not forget the Museum of Torture.
For a small fee, you can peruse a gallery of medieval torture instruments and learn the gory details behind them.
You can also score the coolest souvenirs here and there are packages perfect for every occasion.
The celebration package is a steal and includes perks like priority seating, cake and a personalized announcement during the show. Interestingly, this is also a popular place for proposals.
Though dinner and a show isn't cheap, it's an evening of fun filled with food and entertainment. There are always promotions going on, so you can score great deals. However, while your meal is included with admission, the gratuity is not. Your servers work hard to keep you satisfied, so tip well! Even if this may seem gimmicky, know that Medieval Times (Lyndhurst Castle) has garnered rave reviews. To visit: 149 Polito Avenue, Lyndhurst
