New Jersey offers a variety of ferry adventures, many involving a trip around Manhattan - some even stop at the Statue of Liberty. While they're all amazing, my ideal ferry ride is a little bit different. I travel from one beautiful destination to another, and a beach is most definitely involved. If you're familiar with the Garden State, you know I'm talking about the Cape May-Lewes Ferry!
Your journey will start (and likely end) in Cape May!
Though, that's all up to you. You're more than welcome to take the ferry one-way. For a day full of fun, I'd make it a round trip. Take a trolley tour, search for sea glass, and scope out the spectacular views from the lighthouse before hopping on the ferry.
You're going to fall in love with the ferry!
This massive ferry doesn't only hold people...you can bring your car, boat, bike and smaller RVS! 100 standard size vehicles can fit on board. The trip takes just under 90 minutes each way, crossing the scenic Delaware Bay. If you're lucky, you may have a whale or dolphin escort!
Expect a relaxing ride with all the amenities you need.
The boat is handicap accessible and pet friendly (in certain areas). Need to work? There's Wi-Fi! It also has a gift shop and a food court. At the terminal, you'll find a full service grill. And the views from the sunset deck...they're breathtaking!
When you arrive in Lewes, there is plenty to do.
The Zwaanendael Museum is a favorite, focused on Delaware's first European settlement, Zwaanendael. You'll also want to check out the Historical Society, Cape Henlopen State Park, Lightship Overfalls (one of seven lightships in this country still open to the public, reopening on Memorial Day Weekend), and all the great shops and restaurants downtown. Touch of Italy, Agave Mexican Restaurant, Nectar Cafe, Pig & Publican, and Half Full are all top-rated picks.
The Cape May-Lewes Ferry also offers events and excursion packages.
Make the most out of your trip and consider an excursion package that gives you a great deal on other local attractions like the zoo. Visit on March 31st for a special breakfast buffet with the Easter Bunny! If you're interested in the Lewes Tulip Festival, hitch a ride between April 6-14.
The ferry runs daily, all year long. The ride itself is a can't miss attraction but you're going to love exploring both destinations/departure points. For more to do in Cape May, click here.
