Clinton Road isn't just the most haunted street in New Jersey; some have called it the most haunted road in America. There are many stories surrounding this spooky street, but perhaps the seclusion is what makes it most eerie. Read the terrifying tales below and discover what you believe.
This is Clinton Road, running through West Milford from Route 23 to Upper Greenwood Lake.
It's a secluded, 10-mile stretch of road with no signs of civilization in sight and very few places to turn off. It is heavily shaded and pitch-black at night.
Welcome to Hell?
Spooky legends have surrounded Clinton Road for over 100 years. The legends claim that the road has been host to ghosts, witches, unearthly cryptids, and earthly Klansmen. One story says that two brothers stumbled across a KKK meeting on the road, near Cross Castle. They made it out alive, but the same can't be said for everyone who has traveled down this paranormal path.
Devil Worshipers And Dark Magic
Though the building was torn down decades ago, prior to 1988, Cross Castle on Clinton served as a meeting spot for a different kind of clan - Devil Worshipers (allegedly). Who knows what rituals could have been held here? What evils could have been brought into the realm of the living? If you believe in dark magic, it could be some seriously scary stuff! Reports of mysterious hellhounds and the elusive Jersey Devil are common here, too. Also commonly reported are sightings of a ghost boy. He spends his time near the bridge by Clinton Brook. Many have reported seeing his reflection in the water. Legend has it that if you throw coins into the water, he will throw them back.
Paranormal Tales And Police Investigations
The infamous ghost boy isn't the only haunt on the road. Legend has it that two park rangers were killed just off the road and that they still patrol the area. All the stories surrounding Clinton Road give us the chills, but none are more terrifying than the TRUE story of the Iceman. In 1983, a cyclist spotted vultures circling a tree. After further exploration, he discovered a garbage bag with a human head sticking out The investigation surrounding the murder led to the conviction of notorious Mafia hitman Richard "Iceman" Kuklinski.
Anyone can drive down this dark road, but if you'd like to explore the surrounding area on foot, you'll need a hiking permit. The dense woods offer the ruins of Clinton Ironworks (seen above), several abandoned homes, a reservoir, and small ponds, on top of all the creepy stuff.
