If you've spent much time on Lake Winnipesaukee, you've probably taken at least one boat ride. But did you know that you can cruise around the island on an honest-to-goodness post office? If you're a history buff looking for a memorable adventure, this is the perfect excursion for you.
You may never have thought about how people living on islands get their mail - in some cases, it's by post office boat! For the summer residents of Lake Winnipesaukee's islands, this charming tradition comes to life every year.
The floating post office that serves Winnipesaukee has been in operation since 1892 (on different boats). That makes it the oldest in the nation.
If you're intrigued by this tradition, you're in luck - the mailboat M/V Sophie C. allows passengers on its route!
Take the ride and you'll spend a couple of hours on the water as the boat stops at five islands. Choose either the morning or afternoon route, which go to different groups of islands.
You'll love stopping at each island and watching the residents and campers rush out for their mail, and for a treat - the M/V Sophie C. remains stocked with popsicles and ice cream novelties, and it's a beloved tradition to buy one from the mail boat.
The scenery on this cruise is amazing, and you'll love relaxing and watching it roll by. They have snacks for sale, and of course you can mail a package while you're at it!
The route departs from Weirs Beach, where you can buy tickets. The cost is $28 per adult and $14 for children under 12 (kids under 5 are free).
The boat only operates in the summer, so make sure to put it on your list for next year! Learn more here.
