When it comes to things worth seeing and doing in New Hampshire the list is long. From hikes to lakes to shops to restaurants, you could easily spend each and every weekend exploring the state by car without being bored. But, too often our must-see list is dominated by things we've heard about or seen photos of repeatedly on social media. While we know these things are go-to destinations for good reason, we're also interested in checking out some things that are under-the-radar. Today's focus is an unexpected location that also happens to offer some seriously scenic views!
The Memorial Arch of Tilton is actually in Northfield and it's a replica of a typical Roman Arch.
It was built in 1882 by Charles Tilton after a trip to Rome inspired him to create a memorial to his ancestors.
The arch, made of granite, measures 55 feet high and 40 feet wide making it the largest structure for miles.
Tilton, who made his money during the California gold rush, meant the arch to be a his final resting place.
He also intended on the town of Northfield being incorporated into the town named after him. Northfield never did merge with the town of Tilton, which is why the Memorial Arch of Tilton isn't in Tilton at all.
Today, the arch sits on a hill overlooking the town making it a great place to find some peace and quiet. It's also the perfect vantage point to view the Old Home Day fireworks.
Another fun fact is that the keystone in the arch is actually a time capsule filled with books, newspapers, and various coins.
You can find the arch just off of Summer Street, near the intersection of Bay Street and Elm Street. The parking area has one small sign indicating "Tilton Memorial Arch."
It's an unexpectedly beautiful place to visit and perfect for appreciating the beauty of New Hampshire.
Bring a friend, enjoy the breeze, and think about what you might do with California gold rush money!
The Memorial Arch of Tilton is open every day. Just make your way to Northfield to find it, hop out of the car and take in those views! You can find it by clicking here to input your own starting point for directions.
