The transition of winter into spring also brings with it a change of traditions here in New Hampshire. One of the longest-held traditions — and industries — is maple sugaring. This form of agriculture has been in use for centuries by both indigenous peoples and early European settlers. In a unique event held at The Rocks in Bethlehem, visitors can learn all about this classic New England trade, from how it was done in the past to how it is done now.
The Rocks in Bethlehem is the northern outpost for the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.
The Rocks is perhaps best known for its Christmas tree farm, where you can harvest your own tree for the holiday season.
The property also has a network of hiking paths that feature some pretty spectacular views of the White Mountains.
In addition to the beautiful scenery, an annual event comes to The Rocks that explores the tradition, history, and techniques of maple sugaring in New Hampshire.
During the New Hampshire Maple Experience at The Rocks, visitors will learn how to identify sugar maple trees as well as tips from a fourth-generation sugar maker. This year, the event takes place March 16 - April 6, 2024.
The New Hampshire Maple Museum, located next to the sugarhouse, will have the tools of this trade on display.
Naturally, the event includes tastings of the finished product. Pair the syrup together with a classic cider donut for a unique taste.
