We might not all be excited about the weather that comes with a winter in New Hampshire, but we can probably all agree that some of the winter-related attractions are worth it! We recently told you about not one, but two of our favorite ways to experience a trip through the forest. For those looking for something a little more tame, we recommend our absolute favorite New Hampshire winter experience!
While winter in New Hampshire is beautiful all on its own, there’s something about this spectacular event that makes it truly feel like the winter season has arrived.
Ice Castles might seem magical, but it’s actually the result of one man’s dream of entertaining his daughter. Brent Christensen began constructing magical ice structures for his daughter in his front yard in 2000. People paid attention and eventually, the display grew in demand.
Ice Castles now travels to six different locations around North America and, lucky for us, Lincoln is one of them.
The event usually opens in mid-December, but temperatures must be reliably cold to keep things going and timing has been pushed to mid-January this year.
The Ice Castles are created by artists using individual icicles to build the entire thing.
They create about 10,000 icicles each day, which means hundreds of thousands of them each season. These icicles are then placed throughout the castle area in a way that creates even more ice growth.
While everything here is intentional, nature plays a role in how large each of these structures become.
The result is something magical! Visitors walk through each cave, which allows for everyone to truly understand how impressively built this is.
The ice becomes more magical when LED lights within the caves light up - making for some really incredible photo opportunities!
Each year there are also special events scheduled, including theme nights. If you’re lucky, you may just encounter the Enchanted Frozen Sisters.
Any time to visit is wonderful, but for the best photos and atmosphere you’ll want to check it out just after sunset.
Ice Castles takes place at the Hobo Railroad at 64 Railroad St., Lincoln. To find it, take Exit 33 on I-93. Then take US-3 South before taking Connector Rd. to Railroad Rd. You’ll find directional signs between Exit 33 and the Ice Castles location to help you.
This year’s Ice Castles event will open in mid-January, so be sure to keep an eye out on their website. It’s recommended that visitors purchase tickets ahead of time. Each ticket will allow you to enter during a half hour span of time. And, once you’re in, you can stay for hours!
Tickets range from about $16 to $25, depending on age, when you visit and if you purchase online or as a walk-up.
Learn more on their website and be sure to follow the on Facebook for updated information on opening days and special events.
Once you've spent some time outside, consider getting yourself one of these decadent drinking chocolates!
