The Cog Railway might just be one of the most special train rides in New England. In operation from April to November, the three-hour route takes visitors to the summit of the region’s tallest peak and then back down to the start.
But, this isn’t just a train ride for transportation purposes! The route passes three miles of the western side of Mount Washington, which means some of the best views you can have of the entire presidential range.
While the ride is beautiful it also feels a bit harrowing. This climb is steep! In fact, with an average grade of about 25% and a maximum grade of 37%, the Cog Railway track is the second steepest in the world
The railway got its start in1869, making it the oldest of its type in the world. But don’t worry! There have been lots of renovations since that first trip. Today it’s quite safe and uses the latest technology to make its journeys.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. To take this beautiful ride, you’ll head to North Conway to embark upon your 5.5-hour journey!
The journey goes from North Conway through the beautiful Crawford Notch. While we might certainly be biased, this is one of the most beautiful areas of New England.
While there are plenty of things unique about this train ride, what we love best is the Dorthea Mae Dome car, where your head will be above the top of the train allowing for 360-degree views of the surrounding beauty.
For something extra special, choose to purchase the First Class Package which comes with extra-plush seats and a three-course lunch in the historic Hattie Evans dining car.
During the journey the train will stop at Crawford Station where you have the option of taking a short nature walk with an Appalachian Mountain Club guide.
But, even if you choose to skip the walk you’ll have access to plenty of beautiful nature. Between the bridges and beautiful mountain passes, it’s clear that New Hampshire is one of the most beautiful states in the country.
