New Hampshire is full of quirky little secrets – museums and historic homes that just don't get enough attention. Given the seacoast and lakeshore that we adore in our state, it's no surprise that one of these hidden treasures focuses on the history of boating. Right by Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, this great little museum is absolutely worth a visit!
The New Hampshire Boating Museum is sure to catch your eye – it's not just another bland building, that's for sure! Take a closer look and you'll realize that the structure is shaped like a ship's hull flipped over, and it's covered with ocean-themed murals.
Step inside and you'll find a number of vintage and historical boats on display, as well as rotating exhibitions on specific topics. The museum's staff is passionate about boats, and will be more than happy to answer any of your questions.
Exhibits include both full-sized boats, and diminutive models. There's something for every kind of boat lover!
The museum isn't just committed to displaying historical boats – it also works to restore them with a dedicated team of volunteers, and also offers boat-building courses.
Looking for the perfect gift for a boat lover? You're sure to find it in their gift shop.
Keep an eye out for the museum's special events. Anything held inside the museum is stunning, and you definitely don't want to miss their annual tour of some of the grandest boathouses on Lake Winnipesaukee.
After spending some time admiring all those boats, you'll probably get a hankering to head out on the water. Luckily enough, you can go right down to the waterfront for a cruise on the Millie B, a replica 1928 Hacker-Craft.
Don't assume that it's a pokey ride just because the boat is antique – as it turns out, you're in for a thrill! The 45 minute ride will take you all over Wolfeboro Bay, and it's a perfect way to cap a day at the museum.
The museum is located at 399 Center St, Wolfeboro, NH 03894. Check out their website or Facebook page for more information!
