A former celebrity hot spot with a hidden (and haunted) tunnel system, the historic Cal Neva Lodge & Casino tunnel in Lake Tahoe has been closed for renovation and restoration since 2013. Rebuilt on the Nevada-California border following a fire in 1937, the building fell into grave disrepair during recent years.
Most people have no idea that a prohibition-era smuggling tunnel exists beneath the property.
When legendary crooner Frank Sinatra bought the Cal-Neva in 1960, he used the tunnel system as a way for mob members and celebrities to move through the property without being seen.
It is believed that stars including Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and even President John F. Kennedy utilized the tunnel while staying at the hotel.
Monroe is said to have stayed in Cabin #3 the weekend before her death in 1962.
Hollywood mystery and countless conspiracy theories surround the emotional two days, which followed a tumultuous end to her love affair with Kennedy.
Before the Cal Neva tunnels closed, private tours were given inside the dimly lit tunnel system.
Some say the spirits of Sinatra and Monroe are haunting the tunnels to this day; footsteps, chatter and singing have been heard from inside the brick hallway.
According to some the Cal Neva tunnels could potentially reopen. A recorded message on their main phone line hints at this possibility. Reddit user a1pha, who claims to be a contractor on the project, says "the Cal-Neva remodel has run into a variety of ... unavoidable, project related delays. I have been inside often enough to say the remodel will look amazing and is proceeding very well ... It will be worth the wait." Well, if it does eventually reopen it will surely be worth the wait. Time will tell.
It remains to be seen how the tunnel spirits feel about the renovations.
