One of the great advantages of living in Nevada is getting to gaze at our beautiful night sky. The majority of our state boasts incredibly low amounts of light pollution, which means we get to see the stars in the sky better than most people. If you've been itching to get out there and see them for yourself then you'll definitely want to consider taking a ride on the Great Basin Star Train. This unique stargazing adventure combines our love for the night sky with our love of trains, and it's just as amazing as it sounds. Hop aboard and prepare to see the night sky like never before! This is an experience you definitely won't forget.
Go on the adventure of a lifetime when you take a ride on the Great Basin Star Train. Ely's Nevada Northern Railway teamed up with Great Basin National Park to create a stargazing experience that is bound to blow you away and you definitely don't want to miss out.
The Star Train departs from Ely on select Friday evenings throughout the summer months. It then takes you on a ride across the mesmerizing Steptoe Valley before stopping at a certain location away from town where you'll hop out and look up at the night sky.
The train ride itself is definitely an exciting portion of the experience. Pulled by one of the railway's vintage diesel locomotives, passengers will enjoy views of the setting sun over the valley and grand views of the rural Intermountain West.
Along for the ride are some of Great Basin National Park's Dark Rangers. They'll be there to guide your journey, inform you of what to look out for, and provide special telescopes for viewing the incredibly dark night sky.
The Great Basin is considered one of the darkest places in the world, so it's the perfect place to host such a unique stargazing experience. Whether you live in the area or you're just visiting, this train ride is a must for any and all.
It's one thing to look up at the night sky from a small town like Ely, but it's something else entirely to view it in a remote destination such as this one. The Star Train makes it possible for you to view Mother Nature's night sky how it was supposed to be seen, without any interference from artificial light.
The Star Train will take off on certain dates through September. Prices are $41 for adults, $20 for children, and free for kids under 4. See the stars like never before and experience a fun train ride at the same time! For more information, visit the website here.
