Nevada is home to quite a few ancient rock carving sites, but Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area is one of the most fascinating. The BLM-managed site allows you to gaze at 10,000-year-old petroglyphs and gives you unique insight to the region's natural history.
Located near Austin and right off Highway 50, this recreation area is simply stunning. Boasting inspiring views of Monitor Valley and the Tequila Mountain Range, it makes for a great place to spend the day exploring.
The bulk of the area's petroglyphs can be found across three gigantic rock slabs. The unique rock carvings are clear as day and seeing them with your own eyes is an extraordinary experience, especially when you remember just how old they are.
It's believed that the carvings belong to the Western Shoshone. They were the only indigenous people to occupy this region of northern Nevada until Europeans arrived in the mid-1800s. At their core, the carvings prove that this area was an active hunting and dwelling site for thousands of years.
An easy self-guided hiking trail leads visitors through Hickison Recreation Area and to the panels of rock carvings. At just a half-mile long, it's suitable for hikers of all skill levels and ages. Just keep in mind that the site is protected by federal law against damage or defacement, and hikers should stay on the trail at all times.
As you explore this gorgeous slice of Nevada wilderness, you can try to picture the large expanses of lake that used to cover this entire area. After the lakes dried up, hunter-gatherers started to use the area for food and shelter.
The history of this area also extends into the 19th century. Famous explorers such as John C. Fremont used the area's trails during their travels, and it was even included on both the Pony Express and Overland Stage routes.
The recreation area also boasts campsites, a day use picnic area, restroom facilities, and barbecues. Make a day of it and explore an area of Nevada that is rich with history and natural beauty!
