When it comes to naming famous bridges in the country, Nevada isn't the first place that comes to mind. We aren't exactly known for any Golden Gates, that's for sure. However, our state is home to quite a few beautiful bridges that are worth visiting. Not only does the bridge featured here boast incredible views, but it's also considered one of the most controversial projects in our state's history. The bridge is a relatively new addition to our state and seeing it should be on everybody's bucket list.
The Galena Creek Bridge hasn't been around for that long, but it's already made quite the name for itself. The twin-span concrete arch bridge is located in Washoe County and carries Interstate 580 and U.S. Route 395 over Galena Creek in between Carson City and Reno.
The bridge was first opened to traffic in August 2012. The bridge has a total length of 1,725 feet and is 295-feet high. It has famously been lauded as the largest cathedral arch bridge in the world.
However, the construction of this fantastic bridge came at a cost. This was the source of a lot of controversy in the early stage's of the bridge's construction. Plagued by several delays and setbacks after construction started in 2003, some people even nicknamed it "The Bridge to Nowhere".
The bridge was costly. It was part of a $600 million extension of Interstate 580. On top of that, locals were hesitant about whether or not the bridge would obstruct the region's bountiful natural beauty. However, that's all history. The bridge has been open for six years and since then has proven itself to be a notable sightseeing spot along this section of the highway.
Driving over this remarkable bridge is always a pleasure. As you drive across the bridge you'll be treated to stunning views of Pleasant Valley. The bridge's minimalist design is also striking against the rugged desert landscape.
One thing's for sure; the addition of Galena Creek Bridge has made this section of highway incredibly enjoyable. The next time you find yourself in this neck of the woods, consider taking a detour over this bridge. Enjoy the view as the sun casts a glow on the valley below and the mountains loom over you in the distance. This is a sight that simply doesn't get old.
