Summer is rodeo season here in the Silver State and it's a time of year that many Nevadans anxiously await. Each and every rodeo is unique in its own way, but there's one that you'll definitely want to keep an eye out for as it approaches. Considered the oldest and longest running rodeo extravaganze in the state, the Silver State Stampede is just around the corner and you don't want to miss it. This is much more than your average rodeo. It's a beloved Nevada tradition that everybody should experience at least once.
Be sure to mark your calendars because Elko's Silver State Stampede is taking place July 12-14, 2019, and it's a spectacular extravaganza that you don't want to miss. After all, this beloved event will make you fall even more in love with our great state!
Considered the oldest rodeo in Nevada, the Silver State Stampede has been an annual tradition in Elko since 1913. The history of the event is rich and fascinating, but it's also a whole lot of fun that you won't soon forget.
It all started when a man named G.S. Garcia, a world-famous saddle maker, decided that Northern Nevada was in desperate need of some old-fashioned entertainment. Additionally, the extra income generated from the event wouldn't hurt. Hence, the Silver State Stampede was born.
Today, the Silver State Stampede draws a gigantic crowd of locals and travelers alike. Boasting both classic rodeo events mixed with its own unique flair, the festival has become a favorite among both rodeo and ranch cowboys all over the state.
Bull riding, mutton busting, barrel racing, bronc riding—you name it, and the Silver State Stampede has it. This rodeo is all about tradition, and you'll find plenty of it here. However, some of the more memorable events are the ones you don't find at every other rodeo.
For instance, the Ring of Fear is one of the most anxiously awaited events that the rodeo has to offer. This is when six men enter a an actual chalk ring with a live bull. The last one standing in the ring wins! It sounds crazy, but it's a blast to watch.
Don't forget to grab a special Stampede souvenir! There will be plenty of local artisans on-site who are selling their handmade items, including amazing leather goods and other cowboy-related gear. Commemorative merchandise is also available to purchase.
