This shot of St. Peter's was taken back in 1973. Not a lot has changed even since then!
The church was originally constructed in 1868. It definitely doesn't look too bad considering it's well over a century old! In fact, the church still holds service every week and is home to a tight-knit yet lively congregation.
The site for the church was actually acquired in 1865. It took three years for the entire church to be constructed and cost $5,500. Over the years, some additions would be made to the church. An expansion was completed in 1874, a library was added in 1875, and a beautiful stained glass window from England was installed shortly after.
The church is certainly striking. Although the identity of the architect is unknown, it's widely believed that Henry Marvin Yerington was responsible for the design. Created in the style of Gothic Revival, the church is noted for its sophistication and Medieval and Classic elements.
Here's an interesting fact—the church's pews are arranged in three groups of rows. This makes it the only Episcopal church west of the Mississippi River without a center aisle to the altar. Who knew?
The church hasn't been without its struggles. It suffered during the collapse of the mining industry in the late 19th century. It was forced to close temporarily in 1909. However, both the church's structure and parish persisted and are doing well to this day.
It's not very often you come across such a historically rich and beautiful structure such as this one. Carson City is full of fascinating destinations, but St. Peter's definitely stands out. Visit it at 314 N. Division St.
