Located in the southern region of Reno is a 56-acre park that most people don't even know exists. Bartley Ranch Regional Park is a historic gem that you'll definitely want to visit. Not only is the area downright gorgeous, but this place holds a lot of fascinating history as well.
This little-known park truly has something for everyone. As you explore the park's scenic pastures you'll discover hiking trails, horse arenas, historic structures, picnic areas, wildlife, diverse plant species, and so much more. Whether you're a history buff or a nature enthusiast, this park has something for you.
Your journey begins as you drive over a quaint covered bridge that ushers you into the park. Already you know that this place is just bursting with charms from the past.
Visiting Bartley Ranch is like stepping back in time to Reno's early days. This specific patch of land was purchased in 1923 by Demetrio Buscalia who turned it into a small dairy farm. After World War II, Buscalia's son would transform the dairy into a horse boarding and training ranch where it operated up until 1985.
Several structures from the ranch's early days are still standing and you can see them for yourself. Occasionally, the park will open up these historic buildings to the public so you can see them from the inside as well. There's no doubt that these century-old wooden structures are truly something else!
Also located within the park is the Historic Huffaker School. The school was originally built in 1867 on land that was donated by one of the area's original settlers, Granville Huffaker. Today, the school looks very much like it did in the early 20th century, complete with red roof and white sides. The schoolhouse was moved to the park in 1992 and is available for visitors to rent for weddings, meetings, and performances.
On top of the park's historical aspect, it also makes for a great place to just hang out on a nice day. The park is home to several picnic pavilions and performances regularly take place in the nearby ampitheater.
There is no fee to enter the park and a significant parking area is available immediately after you cross the bridge. The next time you feel like discovering one of Nevada's best kept secrets, pay a visit to this incredible Old West park!
