School is starting back up in a few weeks and summer is going to be over before we know it. If you're a longtime Nevadan, you know that summer isn't officially over until the annual Great Reno Balloon Race has occurred.This spectacular hot air balloon race is a truly one-of-a-kind event that every Nevadan should attend at least once in their lifetime. Can you call yourself a real Nevadan if you haven't attended the epic Great Reno Balloon Race? This outstanding event occurs once a year and it's this delightful hot air balloon festival that officially marks the end of summer.
This year the festival will take place September 7 through September 9. The Great Reno Balloon Race is considered the largest free hot-air ballooning event in the world and it's a must-see for all Nevadans. Be sure to mark your calendars!
During these magical three days, you can look up at the clear Reno skies and see a plethora of beautiful balloons soaring about. Back when it started in 1982, the festival boasted just 20 balloons. Nowadays, you'll witness up to 100 unique and vibrant hot air balloons in the sky.
The event takes place just a few miles north of downtown Reno. Both young and old will be absolutely enamored with the festival's lively atmosphere and visual wonders. Approximately 120,000 spectators come out each year to attend this highly anticipated event every single year.
The festival is free to attend, but special "VIP Cloud 9 Club" passes can be bought for the ultimate experience. Members of the Cloud 9 Club will receive special privileges like catered breakfasts, up-close seating, VIP parking, and access to a hosted bar.
The festival begins each day before the crack of dawn. A handful of balloons take flight at approximately 5:30 am and it's a majestic sight to witness. Watch in wonder as the balloons glow and twinkle amid the pre-dawn sky.
The "Mass Ascension Launch" takes place at 7:00 am on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Rancho San Rafael Park. There's something incredibly magical about watching these massive balloons of all colors, shapes, and sizes filling the sky before your very eyes.
Meanwhile, concessions and souvenirs are available to purchase on Balloon Boulevard. Grab a cup of hot cocoa, take in the fresh morning air, and sit back as the sky transforms above you.
