With over 40 buildings that have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, it's easy to see that this community has quite the story to tell. Nevada is full of fascinating historic spots. According to the National Register of Historic Places, there are 53 of them in Nye County alone. Of those 53, the majority of them can be found in the eclectic community of Tonopah.
Tonopah is an unincorporated town of just 2,478 individuals. By most people's definition, this is a small town. However, it's actually the county seat of Nye County and despite its small population, it's home to a myriad of stories.
This historic mining town is a must-visit for any Nevadan. Home to over 40 historic structures, visiting Tonopah feels like traveling back in time to the state's early mining days. After all, many of the town's buildings are from that time!
You can almost feel the history radiating from these old-fashioned structures. One of the most notable is the iconic Mizpah Hotel. Constructed over a century ago, it was considered the tallest building in Nevada at a whopping five stories high. Although that title no longer belongs to the hotel, it's still a majestic feature of the community.
The fact that Tonopah is still here and thriving is an impressive feat in itself. After all, dozens of mining towns perished as soon as the gold dwindled. Although Tonopah's population did severely decline, it never fully puttered out.
The best part about exploring this community is discovering those hidden gems that aren't so often photographed or advertised. Small, no-name buildings like the one below may not be as widely known as the Mizpah, but they are as equally fascinating.
Nevada has always been a state that's been proud of its history, but Tonopah even more so. Decades have passed and this town still looks just as it did over a century ago. See for yourself and explore a bit of Nevada history.
