If we could proclaim one town the most haunted in all of Nevada, it would probably be Virginia City. Boasting haunted saloons, hotels, and cemeteries, it seems that ghosts especially like sticking around this historic town. If you're one of many visitors who come to VC to find yourself a ghost, consider a visit to the Mackay Mansion a must. The mansion itself is wonderfully preserved and looks stately as ever. However, it's believed to be VERY haunted, so be sure to watch your back as you peruse this iconic property!
Located in Virginia City's Historic District, Mackay Mansion is an immaculately preserved relic from the mining town's glory days. It's definitely a beautiful structure, but don't be fooled—it's one of the most haunted spots in town.
The gorgeous mansion was constructed in 1859 and was owned by none other than John Mackay, one of the richest men from the Comstock Lode. The mansion was considered extremely luxurious and included features that only the ultra-wealthy at the time got to enjoy, including the town's very first plumbed-in toilet.
Open for tours and special events year-round, visiting the Mackay Mansion is a blast from the past. In fact, don't be surprised if you come across a bit more than century-old furniture while exploring this place...
It's well-known in the paranormal community that Mackay Mansion is a hot spot of ghostly activity. Some visitors stop by solely to try and coax out some sort of paranormal experience. It's even been the subject of an investigation by Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures.
Knowing the mansion's history, it's easy to believe that something lingers here from the beyond. At one point, two robbers attempted to steal the contents of Mackay's safe, only to be shot dead by armed guards. They say their ghosts haunt the lower floor where the safe used to be to this day.
Another known apparition is that of a woman in Victorian garb who's believed to be Mrs. Mackay. Also, seen on the third floor are the spirits of two young girls who ghost hunters call Emma and Lily. When Johnny Depp stayed here while filming Dead Man, he claimed to have seen one of the girls sitting at the foot of his bed!
Mackay Mansion is open year-round every day from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is $6 per person for adults and $4 for kids. Learn more about this haunted mansion and how you can visit it by visiting the official website.
