Nevada is no stranger to petroglyphs but some of the best can be seen in this little-known canyon in the southern region of our state. The canyon is covered in spectacular rock art that dates back thousands of years. This amazing area is where some of Nevada's very first residents gathered and it's a sight that must be seen! If you love exploring the Silver State's most fascinating spots then a trip to this canyon is an absolute must.
Located approximately five miles outside of Laughlin is one of the most fascinating treasure troves in all of Nevada—Grapevine Canyon. Some of Nevada's earliest residents called this place home thousands of years ago, and you can view some of the things they left behind to this day.
The canyon can be found within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The start of an easy hiking trail can be found near the parking lot and will lead you right through the heart of this glorious canyon.
As you head into the canyon, you'll notice just how stunning this region is. Inside the canyon you'll find a small desert spring that flows almost all year round. You'll find yourself surrounded by the most stunning sheer rock walls.
As you delve further into the canyon, you'll notice something peculiar about the rocks that make up the canyon's cliffs. You'll likely want to get a closer look, but prepare to be blown away by what you discover.
A vast amount of the rocks are covered in these vibrant etchings. These petroglyphs, also simply referred to as "rock art", were created some time between 1100 and 1900 AD. It's hard to even fathom just how old these etchings are.
The meaning behind the petroglyphs and who created them is unclear even to this day. However, it's well known that the Mojave inhabited this particular region of the canyon and they are assumed to be the ones who created these beautiful carvings.
As you look over these incredible carvings, you'll probably find yourself trying to form a meaning behind them. You'll see art of what looks to be people, animals, spirals, circles, and more. As you continue along the trail, it truly feels as if you're walking back in time.
Overall, it's estimated that there are over 700 petroglyphs hiding within the canyon. Visit Grapevine Canyon for a unique adventure through one of Nevada's most mysterious areas.
