Kiel Ranch is home to one of the oldest natural artesian springs in Nevada. Pronounced (and occasionally spelled) “Kyle Ranch,” it was a water source for Native tribes and Mormon settlers before coming under the ownership of Conrad Kiel in 1875.
💰 Big Business and Quick Divorces
The 250-acre Kiel Ranch helped Las Vegas flourish with an orchard that produced hay, fruits, and vegetables, allowing Kiel to sell food and wine to miners in the area. The ranch also had a role in providing quickie divorces to Californians.
🧐 The Original True Crime Caper in Vegas
Archibald Stewart was shot dead on the ranch in 1884. Conrad Kiel and infamous outlaw Hank Parrish were accused in the murder. The former was acquitted. The latter left town. Years later, Kiel’s two sons were found dead on the property, ruled a murder-suicide — although rumors persisted that Stewart’s own sons were responsible.
🌳 Historic Preservation
Today, the springs and its surrounding land are preserved and renovated as the seven-acre Kiel Ranch Historic Park. Walk the grounds and dusty paths and you'll come across trees, shaded picnic areas, and historic structures, including a cottage and brick commissary that’s the second-oldest house currently standing in Nevada. A grassy yard lays over the foundation of a mansion built in 1911 for then-owner John S. Park. It burned down in 1992. A boardwalk circles the springs.
🌽 More to Come
The City of North Las Vegas is investing $150,000 to revive the orchard at Kiel Ranch. The work should be done by late November and will include seven rows of fruit trees and raised planters for corn and other vegetables to help feed underserved communities.
🚘 The Surrounding Neighborhood
Kiel Ranch is an unexpected oasis in the middle of an industrial, working-class corner of North Las Vegas. You’re a short drive from Jerry’s Nugget (a casino with a popular bakery) and the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas, whose Westside Bistro is a training ground for students and serves lunch at a hearty discount. You’re only a few miles from Downtown Las Vegas too.
