It's that point in the summer where parents are desperately searching for family-friendly things to do that will keep both the kids and adults entertained. This can be a tricky thing. Don't fear! You don't have to be stuck watching the newest kids movie in theaters for the billionth time. Plan a visit to this iconic planetarium that is sure to keep the entire family occupied for hours on end. This place is a seriously underrated attraction and it's high time that everybody discovered this amazing place for what it is.
Located in Reno, Fleischmann Planetarium is a one-of-a-kind experience that should be on every Nevadan's bucket list this summer. Escape the heat for a bit and step inside. Here you can explore the endless wonders of the galaxy as we know it!
The planetarium is a classic pastime for Reno locals. It originally opened in 1963 and was the first planetarium in the entire country to feature a 360-degree projector. This special projector provided horizon-to-horizon images and could even show an entire day's weather through time-lapse photography.
Today, the planetarium welcomes approximately 50,000 visitors every year. This is the place to go if you have an interest in the wonders of the universe. They even offer a public telescope viewing on the fourth Friday of every month from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
However, the true attraction is seeing a show on the famous Sky Dome in the Star Theater. Prepare to be amazed because you've probably never seen a movie like this before. They have a diverse lineup of space-related movies that they regularly show in this unique theater and it's something you absolutely must experience.
Admission into the Exhibit Hall is free. The exhibits change on a periodic basis to ensure you learn something new with every visit. Current exhibits include "Living In Space" which explores how humans adapt to life not-on-earth, "Deep Space" which contains a black hole simulator, "Our Earth", and "Our Moon".
The "Our Solar System" exhibit is especially impressive and boasts a wide collection of meteorites, including a massive Quinn Canyon meteorite that literally weighs a ton!
There's really no better place to introduce kids to the wonderful mysteries of space and our universe. Especially on a hot summer day, the planetarium is a very welcome retreat.
Fleischmann Planetarium is open every day at 10:00 am. Admission into the exhibits is free but there is a small fee for show admissions. You'll find it located at the University of Nevada, Reno campus at 1664 N Virginia St, Reno, NV 89557.
