There are only seven dark sky sanctuaries in the entire world, and incredibly, Nevada is home to one of them. The Massacre Rim Dark Sky Sanctuary is one of the most remote spaces in all of Nevada. While it’s easy to neglect the area since there seems to be little to do in the way of entertainment, all you need to do to see a spectacular show is look to the sky.

The purpose of designating areas of land as International Dark Sky Sanctuaries is to protect it for both the study and enjoyment of all.
In Nevada, Massacre Rim joined the elite list of dark and wonderful places on March 18, 2019. This ensured it would stay publicly owned and made available to anyone with an interest in the stars as well as the region’s natural uniqueness.
Massacre Rim Dark Sky Sanctuary is within a protected natural area of land, also known as a Wilderness Study Area.
Massacre Rim’s “exceptional quality of starry nights” makes it more than ideal for viewing the cosmos. Given that there is no light pollution to reach its skies at night, and with time to adjust, the naked eye can see spectacular starry skies.
To see the Massacre Rim Dark Sky Sanctuary, you’ll need to head to northern Washoe County where Nevada borders with Oregon and California.
You can travel to the area by vehicle, however, please note that the final portion of your commute will take place on gravel roads that are subject to weather conditions.
It’s said that the stars shine so bright at Massacre Rim that they cast shadows.
The view of the night sky is simply jaw-dropping.

There are many camping options. If you decide to go backpacking, keep in mind the remoteness of the Massacre Rim Dark Sky Sanctuary location. There is a cabin available to campers at the Massacre Ranch Recreation Area that is a first-come, first-serve basis.
Come catch a star, or feel you can reach out and touch one at the Massacre Rim Dark Sky Sanctuary in Nevada. The eye-dazzling blanket of stars will amaze you. Consider making the journey to this magical location, a place you can only find in the state that glistens – Nevada.
