Decades ago, if you wanted to catch the latest new release, you'd head to the drive-in movie theater. With your sweetie beside you and a bucket of popcorn to share, you could just relax in your own car and enjoy the show. Today, drive-ins are much rarer than they used to be, but that doesn't mean you have to miss out on this classic American experience.
The magic of the drive-in movie is alive and well here in Nebraska. In fact, several new drive-ins have popped up at a time when indoor theaters were, oddly enough, questioning their own fates.
In addition to Quasar Drive-In in Valley, there are the SkyView Drive-In in Scottsbluff, the FalconWood Drive-In in Bellevue, the Sandhills Drive-In in Alliance, and the TK/Starlite in Neligh. The Sandhills was closed for a few seasons while it changed owners, and the TK/Starlite is closed as of the time of publication, though the owners say it's not closed permanently.
Quasar is the newest. It was built from the ground up and opened in 2021, just when social distancing was making it necessary to find things to do outdoors and away from others.
Quasar has a single screen and shows first-run movies.
Thursdays are "Classics With a Cause" night, when a single classic film is shown for free. However, patrons are encouraged to make donations at the theater to benefit local charities. Fridays and Saturdays, you can catch a double feature for a very reasonable price.
Like all movie theaters, this locally-owned business exists mainly on the profits from concessions, and it has a whole lot to offer in that area.
The concession stand is more like a fast-food restaurant that carries just about anything you might want to munch on during the movies.
All of the standards are there, like popcorn, candy, and soda, but there are also burgers, hot dogs, nachos, and much more. If you want to bring your own food in, you're required to purchase a food license before entering the theater.
The clean, modern concession building features restrooms and a few fun extras like arcade games. Enjoy a few rounds of pinball before your movie starts to get your blood pumping.
Visitors are also invited to play around on the grounds before the movie starts. The large, open space is perfect for families to play games and run off some extra energy prior to settling down for the film.
There really is nothing more magical than enjoying a great movie under the stars. Quasar Drive-In may be a new addition to Nebraska's list of drive-in theaters, but it's packed with retro charm.
Showtimes, ticket prices, and movie schedules are listed on Quasar Drive-In's website. The theater's Facebook page also has information on special events and other important news.
