There’s nothing quite like a shopping day while you’re out and about in Nashville, Tennessee, though most tourists will find themselves fighting the crowds along 12th Avenue South during a Saturday out. We’d recommend stopping by a more casual shopping district in East Nashville, one that offers a more artistic edge and a little local flair during your visit. The Fatherland District, home to the well-known Shoppes on Fatherland, offers a great stretch of shopping in an easy-to-access area just outside of Nashville’s downtown.
The Fatherland District is not far from the ever-popular 5 Points area and is located on Fatherland Street between 10th and 11th Street. Just keep an eye out for a stretch of brightly colored buildings and loose knots of locals wandering from shop to shop.
Each shop is a unique and thoughtfully curated local business that’s operated on-site. There are no big-box brands or chains here! Instead, you’ll find a series of eateries, coffee shops, specialty stores, and even entertainment opportunities throughout the district. There are roughly 20 shops open at any given period.
If you get hungry during your shopping trip, you can stop for a vegan meal at the Wild Cow, or for fresh sushi at Maru Sushi & Grill. Guerilla Bizkits is another vegan eatery in the Fatherland District, and it focuses on small-batch biscuits made from scratch.
Pick up a specialty tea from the International Tea and Coffee, and you can choose your own Nashville souvenir at Tenn Gallon Hat or Ellie Monster. Konadu Body sells natural body care and botanicals, and Galena Garlic provides specialty fare and seasonings for cooking at home.
The Fatherland District and the surrounding area were properly damaged after the Nashville tornado of 2020, and it’s encouraging and beautiful to see how the locals have managed to rebuild. It’s been a long, hard road, but the shops are once again open and welcoming folks back through the front doors.
Perhaps one of the neatest aspects of this artisanal stretch of shops is that you must know where it is to visit. You won’t simply be stumbling across the Fatherland District, it’s so tucked back in East Nashville, so you can be sure locals will be shopping alongside you. Make sure you ask for Nashville recommendations if you’re looking. Everyone is kind, and the shop owners will be more than happy to help.
