It’s OK to say it: Sometimes we’re a little weird in Montana. We like it that way. We’ve got our share of quirky attractions, and you don’t have to veer very far off the beaten path to see some of them, like these 10 roadside attractions in Montana.
1. The two headed calf at the American Bar in Stockett
If you’re ever cruising down Stockett Road, stop at the American Bar for a peek at a two-headed calf. The calf died shortly after birth, so it was preserved, stuffed and mounted on the bar wall.
2. Steer Montana in Baker
Drive down Main Street in Baker and you’re sure to see the O’Fallon Historical Museum. Steer Montana, the world’s largest steer, is on display. He was 5’9" and weighed an impressive 3,980 pounds.
3. Virginia City’s foot under glass
When you’re passing through Virginia City, you can stop and see the club foot of George Lane, a shoemaker who had some unfortunate luck in the 1800s. He was accused of being a member of Henry Plummer’s gang of Innocents, and even though many town members thought he was innocent, he was found guilty and hanged in January of 1864. His grave can be found at Boot Hill Cemetery, and his foot is under glass at the Thompson Hickman Museum.
4. Merry Widow Health Mine
The area between Boulder and Basin is full of radon, a colorless, tasteless element formed by the aging of radium. Too much radon is believed to be harmful, but supposedly it actually contains healing properties that can cure aches and pains from arthritis, diabetes, migraines, lupus, asthma and more. Spend an hour in the tunnel and see how you feel.
5. The Garden of 1,000 Buddhas in Arlee
You don’t have to drive far off US-93 to see Arlee’s most unique attraction. The garden was created to bring peace and harmony to all.
6. Montana Vortex and House of Mystery
The Montana Vortex is located just off Highway 2 in Columbia Falls. Is it an illusion or is it legit? Find out for yourself.
7. The Talking Penguin Statue in Cut Bank
Yes, this is an actual thing. This giant penguin welcomes people to town, and he talks (when his speaker is working).
8. The Montana Bale Trail
Drive from Hobson to Windham in September and you just might see dozens of creative hay sculptures, the results of the "What the Hey" contest held every year.
9. Nevada City’s two story outhouse
Known to the locals as "Big John," this outhouse sits behind a hotel for the world to see.
10. The Cowboy Muffler Man in Rockvale
If this doesn’t say "America…."
