People in Montana love the beauty of the great outdoors, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they can (or want to!) go on a 20 mile hike, scale mountains, or go whitewater rafting. Luckily, there are plenty of outdoor activities that anyone can participate in. If you know someone who needs to be eased into being outdoorsy, start with something from this list of outdoorsy things in Montana.
1. Go to your local park to read a book.
You’ll be outside getting fresh air, so reading at the park counts. Montana is full of gorgeous parks to enjoy. This is a photo of Missouri River Headwaters State Park in Three Forks.
2. Float the river.
Floating a river is fun for all skill levels. If you’ve never been, you’ll have to buy equipment like inner tubes or an inflatable raft (depending on the river you choose)―but it’s probably much easier to go with friends who have everything and know what they’re doing. Practice good etiquette and use common sense and you’ll fit right in with the seasoned veteran floaters.
3. Go on a short hike, like the Memorial Falls Trail in Central Montana.
This easy, relaxing trail is only a mile long, and it’s beautiful.
4. At Glacier National Park, hike the Trail of the Cedars.
This 1.5 mile hike has boardwalks and bridges, so it’s perfect for the beginning hiker, families with young children, and anyone with a physical disability.
5. Relax at Whitefish City Beach.
Yes, Montana has beaches, and this one in particular is beautiful and fun for a day of soaking up the sun.
6. Head to Zoo Montana in Billings.
Montana’s only zoo and botanical park is a great place to be, especially during the summer.
7. Go birdwatching.
You don’t have to be an outdoors expert to go birdwatching. You just need a pair of binoculars and an idea of where to find feathered friends in your area.
8. Visit Medicine Rocks State Park in Ekalaka.
You can walk around, take photos of the rocks, and see some wildlife without breaking a sweat.
9. Have a picnic.
Is there any better way to enjoy the great outdoors than over a picnic spread? Gather your favorite goodies, a basket and some blankets, and enjoy the warm weather while you dine. Montana is full of amazing picnic spots like Gibson Park in Great Falls, pictured here.
10. Watch the sunset.
Find a place with an amazing view—it won’t be hard, Montana is full of them. Watch the sun sink over the mountains, hills or plains, depending on your location. Voila—you’ve just enjoyed the outdoors. This is a view of the Pioneer Mountains.
11. Head to Norris Hot Springs and enjoy a nice soak.
If you’re feeling really adventurous, go camping afterwards.
12. Stroll through Jefferson City’s Tizer Botanic Gardens.
Montana’s only fully certified botanical garden and arboretum is home to thousands of plants, flowers, and trees. It’s a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
13. Play some disc golf in Missoula.
Missoula has several "folf courses" perfect for a game of frisbee golf.
14. Enjoy happy hour on a rooftop or patio.
Have you ever heard the expression "I’m outdoorsy in that I like drinking on patios?" Sometimes that’s the best way to enjoy the scenery. This is PLONK, which has locations in Bozeman and Missoula (and patios at both).
