We've got our share of haunted places here in Montana, and Halloween is the perfect time to talk about them. And while you can't catch a performance at our state's most haunted theater this time of year (it's open for the summer only), the next time you go, you'll know that anything suspicious you see or hear isn't your imagination.
The Fort Peck Summer Theatre opened in 1934 as a place to entertain those working on the construction of the Fort Peck Dam.
It was instantly popular, and it remains a seasonal favorite for everyone in the area.
From early June through Labor Day weekend, you can catch popular performances like Cabaret, The Little Mermaid, and Leader of the Pack (pictured here).
Locals and travelers looking for a fun night out can enjoy a stellar performance here.
But there's a slight chance you might see more than a show.
The venue is known for its spooky sights and hauntings, and the stories go back for decades.
Quite a few performers and staff members have heard strange sounds in the dressing rooms. Some have even seen apparitions.
Others report hearing the sounds of men working when the theatre is completely empty.
But the most commonly spotted ghost here is that of a man wearing 1930s work clothes.
For what it's worth, the man seems to be friendly, but he's been spotted by enough witnesses that it seems credible. Perhaps coincidentally (or perhaps not), a workman fell and died during the construction of the building in 1934. Maybe he never really left.
Whether or not you believe in ghosts, there's no doubt that there has been quite a bit of unexplained activity here.
But, hauntings aside, it's truly a great place to spend a summer night.
