Montana has been home for many generations of people. And sometimes some people like their home so much, they never want to leave… ever. These six houses in our great state are rumored to be haunted. And whether or not you believe, some of these stories might creep you out.
A lovely historic home on Helena’s lower west side has accumulated a large number of stories about paranormal activity over the years. It dates back to the late 1870s and was once the home of Christmas Gift Evans. The pioneer businessman had been born on Christmas Day, so they named him accordingly. Here’s just one of the many, many ghost stories of the Evans home:
In 1992, the house was vacant and for sale, and Denise King wanted to look at it. The realtor handed her the keys, saying she’d wait in the car. While Denise explored the house, she heard a cupboard door open and close in the kitchen and assumed the realtor had changed her mind. When Denise returned to the car, she asked her realtor if she’d come inside. The realtor said, "No, I won’t go in that house. It’s haunted."
The Daly Mansion in Hamilton is believed to be haunted by the former owners, Marcus Daly and his wife. Visitors have spotted apparitions, and sometimes the smell of cigar smoke wafts through the home when no one is smoking.
Billings’ Moss Mansion is considered one of Montana’s most haunted places. Witnesses have reported hearing strange noises, seeing doors open by themselves and seeing a little girl.
Located in Helena, the Brantley Mansion was once the dream home of Judge Brantley, where he lived with his wife and three kids. Apparently he loved it so much he never left, because the couple who bought the home in 1970 saw and heard some strange things. The couple also had three children, so perhaps the spirit of Judge Brantley was reminded of his own family. The new residents would often hear the big, heavy front door open and shut late at night, and they’d sometimes hear footsteps pacing in the room above the master bedroom that the judge used as an office.
Butte’s Copper King mansion was once the home of William Andrews Clark, an extremely successful entrepreneur. Visitors to the mansion (it’s now a bed and breakfast) have felt the presence of a cold entity hanging out in the game room and seen a light, hazy fog appear to float around the first floor hallway and the basement.
The Kleinschmidt House in Helena once belonged to Theodore H. Kleinschmidt, an immigrant from Prussia, and his wife, Mary. He and Mary had six children, and sadly one of them died in childhood. Guests at this house have apparently heard and even seen apparitions of Mary and her young son, and the couple’s youngest son has been spotted playing in the mansion’s bedrooms.
