Where do you go when you need a getaway but don't want to leave Montana? Some pack up their tents and head straight into the wilderness, others enjoy the more urban appeal of a trip to Bozeman or Missoula. Montana is full of charming small towns that often get overlooked by out-of-state tourists, but just happen to be heaven on Earth to locals. Choteau is one of them.
Choteau is located in Teton County, about 52 miles northwest of Great Falls.
The little city lies along U.S. Routes 89 and 287, east of the Rocky Mountains.
Choteau is literally located on the road less traveled - and that's part of its appeal.
Because it's a bit out of the way for most travelers, it's not a tourist hot spot, but it's still an amazing place to visit.
The town is charming and welcoming, with about 1,700 Montanans calling it home.
There's a sense of community here like no other, which is noticeable as soon as you arrive.
While the city itself is quite small, the area has everything you could ask for: stunning views, attractions, historical sites, restaurants, and coffee shops.
You can see everything from ancient paleontology sites to modern shops and boutiques.
This is definitely a place to go to relax and unwind. That said, it has plenty of excellent amenities.
And if you like outdoor recreation, you'll love visiting any time of year. From golfing and bird watching to hiking and cross country skiing, this part of Montana has it all.
The Old Trail Museum is a must-see, especially if you're a local history buff.
This is an inexpensive family activity that offers a great glimpse into the past and how Montanans used to live.
The museum is actually within a complex that has a fantastic ice cream shop, so you can leave your history lesson with a tasty treat.
In fact, museum aside, this is the best place to get ice cream in town.
Choteau has several tasty restaurants and delis worth trying.
However, if you'd like to talk to the locals, just grab a seat at the Log Cabin Cafe. This is the ultimate small-town dining experience, complete with a friendly staff and plenty of regular patrons. The food also happens to be delicious.
Pay Choteau a visit the next time you need a weekend away. And don't forget about these delightful small towns either.
