Mississippi is home to some wonderfully preserved sites from the past, as well as some that are being reclaimed by nature. Sadly, the Jackson International Speedway in Mississippi isn’t one of them. At one time, it was the world’s fastest ½-mile racetrack. Today, it sits abandoned in the woods, diminishing with each passing year. Take a look at this abandoned racetrack in Mississippi:
The now-abandoned Jackson International Speedway is located in a section of woods off Highway 80 in Clinton, MS.
Though abandoned and left to deteriorate, remnants of this half-mile racetrack remain.
In addition to the track itself, there is old signage and other debris scattered about the former site.
It may be hard to imagine now, but the speedway was once a popular spot, attracting big crowds.
It was open from 1968 to 1985. In 1986, new owners took over and changed the name to Mississippi Motor Speedway.
Sadly, the speedway was closed just a year later due to problems with the track’s asphalt. In fact, it’s said the final race "came unexpectedly when several competitors walked out due to the damage to their race cars," which was caused by the asphalt.
During its heyday, the speedway hosted local drivers as well as some bigger names, such as Jay Gonzolez, Freddy Fryer, and Donald Watson.
One of the most notable races took place in 1970 when Bobby Harrell set a new World Record. Harrell made a lap around the 1/2-mile track in just 16.78 seconds – a record that wasn’t broken for seven years.
This is a significant piece of car racing history, and it’s sad to see the current state of the racetrack.
Before long, memories will be all that remains of Jackson International Speedway.
Let's take a closer look at the abandoned track.
